✨ Client Spotlight ✨Posted with client permission. Sydney first reached out to me nearly 3 months before her due date after seeing me recommended in a local Facebook mom’s group. As a busy pediatrician preparing to return to work, she wanted to give herself the best possible start with breastfeeding and pumping. Her goals were to successfully breastfeed, build a strong milk supply, and ensure baby Brady could both nurse and take a bottle. We met prenatally to develop a personalized plan, and she followed through by purchasing the recommended supplies and preparing before delivery. When I saw her at 4 days postpartum, she was experiencing severe engorgement, cracked nipples, and significant pain with both breastfeeding and pumping. Despite the challenges, Sydney stayed committed, trusted the process, and followed her care plan. By our follow-up visit, her engorgement had resolved, her nipples had healed, her milk supply was thriving, and Brady had excellent weight gain. Over the following visits, we fine-tuned breastfeeding, pumping on her Spectra, Medela hand pump, and wearable pump, and continued weighted feeds and latch assessments. Today, Brady is not only meeting his feeding goals—he’s exceeding them! 💙 Lactation support is a partnership. 🐞 Have you heard of the Haakaa Ladybug Milk Collector? The Haakaa Ladybug is a passive milk collector designed to catch breastmilk that naturally leaks from the opposite breast while you’re nursing or pumping. ✨ Hand Expression: A Skill Every Breastfeeding Parent Should Know! ✨ Did you know that you don’t always need a pump to express breast milk? Hand expression is a simple, effective technique that can help you collect milk anytime, anywhere. 🤲 How to Hand Express:• Wash your hands first.• Place your thumb above your nipple and your fingers below it, forming a “C” shape about 1.5-2 inches behind the nipple.• Gently press back toward your chest wall.• Compress your thumb and fingers together, then release. Avoid sliding your fingers across the skin.• Repeat in a rhythmic pattern while rotating around the breast to drain different milk ducts. 💛 When is hand expression helpful?✔️ During pregnancy to collect colostrum (check with your obgyn first) .✔️ In the first few days after birth, when small amounts of colostrum can be easier to collect by hand than with a pump.✔️ To soften a full breast before latching, making it easier for baby to achieve a deep latch.✔️ To relieve mild engorgement or discomfort.✔️ To encourage milk flow before pumping or nursing.✔️ If you’re away from your pump or need to relieve fullness unexpectedly.✔️ To express milk after a feeding if your breasts still feel uncomfortably full. Like any new skill, hand expression takes practice—but once you learn it, it’s a valuable tool to have throughout your breastfeeding journey. ✨ Have you ever tried hand expression?
